Genting Hotel at Resorts World Birmingham
Genting’s £150 million Resorts World opened beside the NEC in October 2015 with a casino at its core and a 184-room hotel on top. It is the closest thing the UK has to a Las Vegas-style integrated resort - and one of the easiest to reach, five minutes from Birmingham Airport.
Overview
Resorts World Birmingham is a mixed complex by the Malaysian Genting Group: a Genting casino, an 11-screen Cineworld with IMAX, an outlet mall of about 50 shops, a spa, bars and restaurants, the VOX conference centre and, on the upper floors, the four-star Genting Hotel with 184 rooms. Planning was granted in 2012, construction began in 2013 and the complex opened on 21 October 2015 as Genting’s first Resorts World outside Asia and the United States.
The hotel’s signature is the Sky Bar & Restaurant on the top floor with views over Pendigo Lake and the NEC; the Santai Spa offers float-therapy pods alongside a gym. The property won a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice award in 2023.
Location
Pendigo Way, on the NEC campus in Solihull, east of Birmingham. Birmingham Airport and Birmingham International station are a five-minute shuttle or walk away, and central Birmingham is ten minutes by train. From Norway there are direct flights to Birmingham from Oslo with several airlines; the hotel is a natural first or last night for a UK trip.

Casino history
Solihull Council awarded the “large casino” licence created by the UK Gambling Act 2005 in June 2011, one of only eight such licences in Britain. Genting won the site next to the NEC and built the complex from February 2013, opening on 21 October 2015. The casino was designed as the anchor tenant of a leisure and shopping destination rather than a stand-alone gaming hall, mirroring Genting’s Resorts World model in Malaysia and Singapore.
It remains Genting UK’s flagship venue and one of the few British casinos with a hotel, cinema and conference centre under one roof. Entry follows the standard UK regime: 18+, Challenge 25 ID checks and no membership requirement since the 2005 Act abolished the 24-hour rule.

Editor’s summary
Convenient rather than romantic: this is a well-run leisure complex next to an airport and an exhibition centre, and the hotel is comfortable, modern and fairly priced. The casino is large by UK standards, free to enter and relaxed about dress. For a Norwegian traveller it works best as a stopover with a night out - the Sky Bar, a film, a few hands of blackjack - rather than a destination in itself.
