CasinoHotel Velden

Velden am Wörthersee is Austria’s lakeside resort town and Casino Velden has been its centre of gravity since 1950. The Casinos Austria group runs a 41-room hotel directly opposite, so the casino, its restaurant Die Yacht and the lake promenade are all within a hundred steps of your room.

Overview

CasinoHotel Velden is a four-star hotel with 41 rooms operated by Cuisino Ges.m.b.H., the hospitality arm of Casinos Austria. It stands at Am Corso 10 on Velden’s lakeside promenade, directly across from Casino Velden, and offers private lake access, a café-restaurant and rooms with air conditioning - some Superior rooms have their own sauna. It is one of the smallest hotels on this site and the only one built purely to serve a casino.

Casino Velden itself is one of the twelve Casinos Austria venues, famous for its lakeside terrace, the restaurant Die Yacht and the Casinos Austria European Poker Championship held every July since 2015. Note that in 2025 Casinos Austria named Velden among locations “under review” because of new gambling taxes; as of August 2026 both hotel and casino are operating and the 2026 poker championship took place in July.

Location

Am Corso 10, 9220 Velden am Wörthersee, Carinthia, southern Austria. Klagenfurt Airport is 25 minutes by car; Ljubljana and Graz are alternatives. From Norway the practical route is a flight to Vienna or Munich and a train or rental car south - Velden is a summer-holiday destination rather than a city break, and the casino’s busiest weeks coincide with the July poker championship.

Casino history

Casino Velden opened on 14 July 1950 as Austria’s fifth casino, in a villa on the promenade of what was already the country’s most fashionable summer resort. An open-air gaming area with two tables was added in 1974. In November 1987 the old building was demolished and a new casino, with its now-familiar glass front onto the lake, opened on 26 May 1989.

Since 2015 Velden has hosted the Casinos Austria European Poker Championship each July; the 35th edition ran from 14 to 26 July 2026. The casino and its hotel are part of Casinos Austria, the state-linked company that holds all of Austria’s casino concessions and, through Casinos Austria International, co-owns Casino Copenhagen.

Editor’s summary

For Norwegians used to lakes and mountains, Velden is familiar scenery with an unfamiliar centrepiece. The hotel is small and pleasant rather than luxurious, and its whole reason to exist is the casino terrace across the street. Come in July for the poker championship atmosphere, or in September for a quiet lake and a table to yourself. Check the Casinos Austria website before booking, given the operator’s 2025 review of smaller locations.
